The World of Umbra · Lore
“We are the wall. We are the watch.”
The shield of Umbra. Not conquest — defence: of the roads, the settled lands, and everyone asleep behind the walls.
The Bell had spoken. The Iron answered.
Iron exists to hold back the Hollow, the raiders, and everything else that would put out the light of settled lands. It is not an army of expansion and has never wanted to be one. Its measure of success is unglamorous and absolute: the road is still open, and the people who used it got home.
The Order is built from watches, companies, keeps and regional commands, and the daily work is training, patrols, maintaining equipment, answering disasters, and keeping the trade roads safe. Veterans are expected to train the ones who come after them — the watch is meant to outlive the watchman.
Every knight and guardian swears to place the safety of the innocent above personal glory. That order of priority is the whole Order in a line, and it is why Iron marks its dead where they stood rather than where it would be convenient to visit them.
