THE THREE ORDERS

They struck the Bell themselves. It was the only thing left to do.

Iron, Verdant and Veiled — three traditions who kept the heartbeat of the world, forgot why, and remembered too late. Thousands of years later, one of them will train you.

First, the one thing worth knowing

Resonance.

Sound is how the world's energy is heard

Resonance runs through every living thing. It is not a spell or a substance — it is the world itself, and sound is how it reaches you. When a bell rings, that is Resonance, made audible. Which is why the Verdant listen where few can hear, why the Veiled guard names and songs like treasure, and why the surest sign that something has gone wrong is silence.

How the world got this way

Every bell knew every name.

This is old history — thousands of years old. Most people alive today believe none of it ever happened.

The first age

The Wardwrights

Before kingdoms, the first builders cut the roads and raised the bridges. They also fashioned the Black Bell — Resonance given physical form — and raised the wardstones, beacons and towers whose single purpose was to keep the Hollow from ever reaching it.

The age of harmony

Three Orders kept the watch

Iron held the roads and gates. Verdant walked the green ways. Veiled kept the names, maps and vows. And the Bell was the world's heartbeat: the living stood, and the dead found peace. Nobody thought to be grateful for that. Why would you thank a thing that has always been true?

The long neglect

The Forgetting

No army broke the wards. Comfort did. The keepers' own promise had always been if one grows cold, another burns — and slowly that became the excuse instead of the duty. One old watch was left unmanned, trusting someone else would stand. No great battle, no final cry; only fires allowed to die, one hill at a time. The Orders endured — but they had forgotten what they were for.

The first silence

The Bell rings

With the wards failing, the Hollow drew close. And the Bell rang — not in triumph, but in warning. It never rang without a cause. Across the land, the scattered Orders remembered their watch.

The other answer

The Crown of Crows

Others heard the same toll and called it an invitation. They pointed at cracked wardstones and broken vows and asked why anyone still knelt to an order that had already failed.

The oath

The Oathbound

Fighting alone, each Order won only small victories while the dark gathered. So they swore together — every banner kept, every purpose the same. They did not swear to conquer. They swore that no child would inherit a world consumed.

The old chapel

The Bell answers

The Crown of Crows did not lay siege. They prayed. Hands reached for the ancient bronze — and the Bell began to answer them. Not with warning. With hunger.

The last toll

The Shattering

The Bell could not be saved, only denied. The Veiled spoke the truth no one wished to hear, and all three struck together. Better silence than despair. As it fell its Resonance rolled out across the land and every wardstone cried at once — then the shards scattered into crypts, keeps, seas and caves.

Now — thousands of years later

The wards are failing again

History became legend. The wards raised over the hidden shards have held for millennia, and they are giving way in your lifetime. You arrive at Blackwood Crossing an ordinary traveller, in the season the seals begin to break.

What survives today are fractured inheritors of names thousands of years old. Each still trains, still arms, and still asks something different of you.

Warriors · Hold the line

We are the wall. We are the watch.

"Not to conquer, not to reign — but to bear the people's pain."

Iron holds what people actually live on: the roads, the gates, the walls, the keeps. When the Bell rang they unlocked halls that had stood shut for generations and lifted helms out of the dust.

They believe civilization survives because somebody stands where the light ends and does not move.

  • Plays as the front line — armour, shields, sustained pressure
  • Fights for ground held, roads kept open, people alive
  • Hid the shards sealed behind forgotten walls
  • Fell into isolated strongholds, each holding out alone

Rangers · The forest watches

We are the root. We are the wild. We are the ward.

"The land is not inherited. It is entrusted."

Of the three, the Verdant never truly slept. The forests remembered when everyone else forgot, and they walked the hidden ways listening for Resonance in root, spring and birdsong.

They know what the fog means, which paths still hold, and which parts of the wood are no longer the wood.

  • Plays as the hunter — range, mobility, tracking, traps
  • Fights for the wild places that can still be saved
  • Hid the shards beneath roots older than kings
  • Fell into the haunted forests, scattered and half-legend

Mages · Keepers of memory

We watch. We weave. We endure.

"Every kingdom turns to dust. Memory, given voice, outlives them all."

The Veiled keep what cannot be rebuilt: names, maps, songs, vows, the truths no kingdom could define. They alone still remember what the Bell was called before it was ever called black.

It was the Veiled who said aloud that the Bell had to be struck. Knowing a thing first is its own kind of wound.

  • Plays as the caster — Resonance, wards, the burning arts
  • Fights for what must not be forgotten
  • Hid the shards by erasing the paths — leaving only riddles for those yet unborn
  • Fell into ruin as its scholars turned to forbidden work

The Cult · They do not worship the Hollow

"The Hollow is not our master. It is our inheritance."

They came in no armour and flew no banners — only whispered words that frightened people passed along. They walked where kingdoms had turned to dust, offering strength to broken hearts and empty hands: a fate no king commands.

They took the crow as their sign because it is first to feed where kingdoms fall and last to leave forgotten places. It neither fears ruin nor mourns it. It endures. So they crowned themselves not in gold, but in black feathers.

Their case is uncomfortably strong. The wardstones did crack. The vows did fade. The Orders watched, and still the world fell — so why, they ask, cling to dreams that could not prevail? And when the Black Bell rang its warning, they heard something else entirely: do not flee — become what you were meant to be.

They have endured for thousands of years. The same crown, worn by different heads. In this age their most zealous sect is the Ebon Choir, who want the Bell not shared but controlled — and its priest Malachar Veyne preaches that death itself is a prison the Bell built.

The Iron Order calls them traitors. The Verdant call them defilers. The Veiled call them the greatest danger to memory itself. The Crown of Crows rejects every accusation — and yet, for every servant the Hollow ever took, the first belief was always that they still commanded it.

The watch has never ended.

Only changed hands. Gothika Online 3D is in development and taking on playtesters — pick an Order, take a lantern, and see how far past the gate you get.
